April has been a busy month of bag making, making new stock for my shelf at Gingerbugs & Co as well as getting ready for my first in-person events of the year. So it's the perfect time to try out some fresh new bag patterns and get people's reactions to the new designs.
I've been looking at smaller crossbody bags where I can feature a pretty fabric with a coordinating accent fabric and the new Mia pattern* by Sallie Tomato fits the bill!
The Mia bag pattern* is a beginner friendly and also domestic machine friendly pattern. It is a measure and cut style of pattern, so you do not need to print out any pieces.
I chose quilting weight cottons for the feature fabrics and dry oilskin, faux leather or faux suede for the contrast, all of which are water repellent and durable.
The pattern calls for 3/4" metal hardware for the adjustable and detachable shoulder strap, but it works fine with 1" hardware too which is what I used here.
You could also turn the bag into a clutch purse with a side wristlet strap, add a chain strap instead for an evening bag or special occasion, or choose to omit the hardware all together for an everyday beauty bag! With Mia*, the possibilities are endless!
The bag has a layer of foam padding for a squishy, compact result. I added a layer of woven cotton interfacing to all the quilting cotton pieces too minus the seam allowance, just to strengthen the fabric a bit more.
The Mia bag* has a flat squared off base to allow it to stand upright and to pack more in.
Quick to cut out and assemble, this sweet crossbody bag will be perfect for my upcoming craft markets in the Spring! I used a strong 1" nylon webbing from Country Cow Designs for the shoulder straps instead of sewing fabric ones.
I see many more Mia's* on the horizon! Fancy giving it a go? You will find all the details on the Sallie Tomato website including a link to their video tutorial and they even have a Mia kit* to get you started!
